About the Artist
During a time in which it was rare to have female painters widely accepted by patrons, Artemisia Gentileschi broke those norms during the Baroque Age in Italy. Born in Rome in 1593, she became the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno, an art academy in Florence founded by Cosimo di Medici with the influence of both Michelangelo Buonarroti and Giorgio Vasari. Gentileschi, today, is regarded as one of the most expressive and progressive female painters in art history, as seen in paintings that include Judith Slaying Holofernes (1610) and her Allegory of Inclination (1615).

About the Movement
Gentileschi worked in the Baroque Age of art. After the Renaissance Age, Baroque art was encouraged and influenced by the Catholic Church and the Counter Reformation to bring citizens back to Catholicism from the simple and austere Protestantism. Baroque art tended to be highly decorative and extravagant, creating dramatic scenes and vivid narratives through its painting and sculpture. Some of the most famous Baroque artists included Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Carracci Brothers (Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico), Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, and Pietro da Cortona.

Fun Fact: Due to men at the time prevented from using nude female models, Gentileschi (being a woman) was able to use the nude female body within her paintings, giving her a painterly advantage over men of the Baroque Age.
