About the Artwork
As one of several variations of the boy wearing the red waistcoat, Paul Cézanne's The Boy in the Red Vest shows the relationship and visual awareness between color, form, and space. The background and space around the boy has blue tones, which makes the red vest pop to viewers. Cézanne captures the emotion within the boy's face, which seems to match the blue, melancholic tones of the scene. The artist uses angles in order to visually drive viewers' eyes throughout the scene. The pants and seat of the boy angles up and toward the canvas-right, moving the viewers' eyes toward the boy's face. The same can be said about the angle of the boy's left arm, which also points towards his face and expression. The cool-colored curtain on the left side of the canvas, the desk, and the back wall all visually frame the boy within the canvas, allowing Cézanne to capture his red vest and melancholic emotion vividly and letting it be the main focal point of the painting.

About the Artist
Paul Cézanne led the art world through the turn of the 19th Century into the 20th Century (or from the 1800s into the 1900s). He used the painterly, expressive brushstrokes from the Impressionist style while incorporating his use of color to highlight specific figures, motifs, or symbolism within the scenes. Cézanne was influenced by geometric spacing within his compositions, allowing shapes and the formation of his figures and objects to form unique motifs in addition to his color palette. Some of his more impressive works of art include The Large Bathers (1898), his Château Noir (1904), and The Basket of Apples (1895), all which are paintings to be collected within the Hall of the Art Thieves.

About the Movement
The Boy in the Red Vest was composed in Post-Impressionist Age of art. As a subset of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism (also spelled Postimpressionism) was mostly a French movement toward the end of the 19th Century (or the latter decades in the 1800s). As a way to counter the Impressionist use of naturalism in their light and color, Post-Impressionist artists used a more abstract color palette, where the colors were more symbolic than natural. Some of the most famous Post-Impressionist artists included Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, and Vincent van Gogh.
