About the Artwork
The long Chinese landscape painting by Huang Gongwang is known for the extreme detail and precision of the serenity within the surrounding landscape. Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains was originally one expansive painting; however, an unfortunate fire split the painting into two pieces. One is held within the Zhejiang Provincial Museum (Hangzhou, China) while the other is on display at the National Palace Museum (Taipei, Taiwan). The Fuchun Mountains (just south of Hangzhou, China) are elegantly rendered on the silk canvas, allowing audiences to view its masterful detail, as if placed amongst the land, themselves.

About the Artist
Born in the late stages of the Southern Song Dynasty and ultimately becoming one of the four masters of the Yuan Dynasty, Huang Gongwang originally rejected the inkwash style of landscape painting. However, as he grew into his career as an artist, he became one of the most iconic inkwash painters of China during his lifetime. His most famous painting is his Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains (1350), which is highlighted within the Hall of the art Thieves.

About the Movement
Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains was composed in the Song Dynasty of art. From 960 to 1279, painting during the Song Dynasty was split between two time frames: the Northern Song (960 to 1127) and the Southern Song (1127 to 1279). Northern Song art focused more on large, immense, expansive landscapes that had roots and influences from politics and society. The art of the Southern Song period were smaller in scale and showed more intimate scenes. Some of the most famous Song Dynasty artists included Zhang Zeduan, Guo Xi, Ma Yuan, and Xia Gui.
