Georgia O'Keeffe
About the Artist
Best known for her large, abstract flowers, Georgia O'Keeffe was born in Wisconsin and became known as the Mother of American Modernism. She has also depicted scenes of New York City as well as New Mexico. Influenced by Precisionism (the art movement of the 1920s and 1930s that depicted Cubist-style modern buildings) as well as nature, O'Keeffe depicted petals, stems, leaves, and rocks in an abstract fashion with bright, vivid colors. Some of these works include her Blue and Green Music (1921), Pineapple Bud (1939), and her Red Canna (1919).
About the Movement
O'Keeffe worked in the Modernist Age of art. Modernism was a philosophical movement that influenced art during the late stages of the 19th Century and into the 20th (or the later decades of the 1800s into the 1900s). Artists during this time rejected the religious and spiritual themes of the Enlightenment, and Modernists showcased rhetoric of modern society and industrialism. Some of the most famous Modernist artists included Henri Matisse, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Fun Fact: O'Keeffe was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom as well as the National Medal of Arts
