Lamentation

Picture
Artist: Giotto di Bondone
Year Composed: 1306
Artistic Movement: Renaissance
Nationality: Italy

Floor Found in Château: First Garden
About the Artwork
Located within the Arena Chapel (Padua, Italy), Giotto di Bondone covered the walls with various panels to celebrate the lives of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. His Lamentation is located on the north wall of the chapel in the lower row of panels, set between the Crucifixion (1306) and The Resurrection of Jesus (1306). Within the story of Jesus' life, the scene of Lamentation is when Christ's body is taken off the crucifix and mourned before his burial. The main scene shows the grief of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus, which can also be seen within scenes of the Pieta (meaning "pity", and most-famously rendered by Michelangelo Buonarroti's Pieta (1498-1499)). Within Giotto's Lamentation, viewers can see Christ's body being held by the Madonna as the pair are surrounded by saints, holy figures, and angels, who are flying in the blue sky.

About the Artist
As one of the earliest Renaissance paintings, Giotto di Bondone, or more commonly known as just Giotto, was born in the Republic of Florence. Within the Arena Chapel in Padua, Giotto was commissioned to depict scenes of the life of the Virgin Mary as well as the life of Jesus Christ, and, as a whole, the pieces are known to be one of the supreme works of the early Renaissance. These frescoes include Giotto's Marriage of the Virgin (1306), Lamentation (1306), The Adoration of the Magi (1306), and The Wedding at Cana (1306). This biblical narrative helped spark one of the most universally-known art movements in history.

About the Movement
Lamentation was composed in the Renaissance Age of art. The Renaissance Age was a time, mostly known throughout Europe, that occurred during the 14th and 17th Centuries (or between the 1300s and 1600s). It lies between the Middle Ages and the Baroque Age. Literally meaning "rebirth", the Renaissance was a rebirth of Classical antiquity, allowing artists, writers, poets, scholars, scientists, and philosophers to study and pay homage to their ancient ancestors. During this time, artists were known for painting and sculpting works of Greco-Roman mythology or narratives from the Bible that showcased both cultural themes as well as themes of Christianity. Some of the most famous Renaissance artists included Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Sanzio, and Tiziano Vecello (better known as Titian).
