About the Artwork
Madame de Wailly, née Adélaïde-Flore Belleville, or simply known as Madame de Wailly, was composed by Augustin Pajou at the end of the 18th Century (or in the later decades of the 1700s). Identified as the wife of Pajou's friend, Charles de Wailly, the detail and emotion of the sitter can be both visibly seen and emotionally felt when gazing upon this sculpture. From the exquisite detail in the curls of her hair to the delicate folds of the clothing draped down her torso, Pajou's Madame de Wailly highlights the true narrative of the Baroque Age, giving audiences a snapshot within the life, the emotions, and the mind of the sitter.

About the Artist
Augustin Pajou was born in Paris, France, and became a preeminent bust sculptor of the French Baroque Age of art. The extravagant realism behind his sculptures allowed for audiences to almost feel the emotion and presence of these sitters. Works such as his Bust of Michel-Jean Sedaine (1775) and his Bust of Madame du Barry (1773) draw attention to the precise and extreme detail of these works. After winning the Grand Prix de Rome, a prestigious scholarship for French art students, at the age of eighteen, Pajou went on to have his sculptures become show pieces within renowned galleries across the world, including the Louvre (Paris, France), the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City, New York), and the Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg, Russia).

About the Movement
Madame de Wailly was composed in the Baroque Age of art. After the Renaissance Age, Baroque art was encouraged and influenced by the Catholic Church and the Counter Reformation to bring citizens back to Catholicism from the simple and austere Protestantism. Baroque art tended to be highly decorative and extravagant, creating dramatic scenes and vivid narratives through its painting and sculpture. Some of the most famous Baroque artists included Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Carracci Brothers (Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico), Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, and Pietro da Cortona.
