About the Artwork
Also known as La Belle Jardinière, Raphael Sanzio's Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist shows the young Christ Child holding the leg of the Virgin Mary as the infant John the Baptist (complete with his iconic wooden staff) is seen looking at Jesus. This is part of a three-painting series that features the same trio; the other two works including Raphael's Madonna of the Goldfinch (1505) and his Madonna of the Meadow (1506). The landscape behind the trio is pristine and serene, comparable to the biblical Garden of Eden. The trio is position in a pyramidal layout, which is typical for most representation of the two different holy trios: the trio of the Virgin Mary, Christ, and John the Baptist, and the trio of Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit. The pyramid is a symbolic reference to foundation that ultimately culminates at its peak: Heaven.

About the Artist
Raphael Sanzio, who (like Michelangelo) just goes by his first name, was born in the town of Urbino in the central portion on the Italian Peninsula. Although dying young at the age of 37, Raphael managed a rather large and robust artist workshop throughout his adult life. He is known for having a rivalry with Michelangelo, and is known for his serenity and harmony within not only his own character, but also within his works of art. Some of his more famous works include his School of Athens (1509-1511), The Wedding of the Virgin (1504), and his Madonna of the Meadow (1506). No one truly knows what caused his early death, but he is buried within the Pantheon in Rome.

About the Movement
Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist was composed in the Renaissance Age of art. The Renaissance Age was a time, mostly known throughout Europe, that occurred during the 14th and 17th Centuries (or between the 1300s and 1600s). It lies between the Middle Ages and the Baroque Age. Literally meaning "rebirth", the Renaissance was a rebirth of Classical antiquity, allowing artists, writers, poets, scholars, scientists, and philosophers to study and pay homage to their ancient ancestors. During this time, artists were known for painting and sculpting works of Greco-Roman mythology or narratives from the Bible that showcased both cultural themes as well as themes of Christianity. Some of the most famous Renaissance artists included Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Sanzio, and Tiziano Vecello (better known as Titian).
