About the Artwork
Representing the young singer before drowning in the river during the Shakespearean play, Hamlet, Sir John Everett Millais' Ophelia shows the true beauty within the natural landscape surrounding the young woman. Known for its realistic rendered of the land and its fictional accuracy of the scene, Ophelia has become one of the most iconic paintings of the 19th Century (or of the 1800s), even gathering praise and acclaim from both Salvador Dalí as well as the nation of Japan.

About the Artist
Like John William Waterhouse, Sir John Everett Millais was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which ultimately rejected the aesthetics and motifs of the Mannerist style (an art movement after the Renaissance went away from the technique and aesthetics of Raphael Sanzio). With works such as his Ophelia (1852), The Order of Release (1853), and Mariana (1851), Millais sought to composed realistic renderings of figures and especially of the natural world.

About the Movement
Ophelia was composed in the Modernist Age of art. Modernism was a philosophical movement that influenced art during the late stages of the 19th Century and into the 20th (or the later decades of the 1800s into the 1900s). Artists during this time rejected the religious and spiritual themes of the Enlightenment, and Modernists showcased rhetoric of modern society and industrialism. Some of the most famous Modernist artists included Henri Matisse, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
