About the Artist
Seen as the most influential Flemish Baroque painter, Peter Paul Rubens portrayed both mythological and Christian figures and symbolism within his highly-charged, dramatic, and vibrant paintings. Typical of the Baroque Age of art, Rubens' paintings showcased extreme grandeur, drama, sensuality, and movement, all of which were promoted by the Catholic Church during the Counter Reformation. These large-scale, ornate pieces include The Fall of Phaeton (1604), the Descent from the Cross (1618), The Fall of Man (1628-1629), and his Daniel in the Lions' Den (1614-1616).

About the Movement
Rubens worked in the Baroque Age of art. After the Renaissance Age, Baroque art was encouraged and influenced by the Catholic Church and the Counter Reformation to bring citizens back to Catholicism from the simple and austere Protestantism. Baroque art tended to be highly decorative and extravagant, creating dramatic scenes and vivid narratives through its painting and sculpture. Some of the most famous Baroque artists included Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Carracci Brothers (Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico), Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, and Pietro da Cortona.

Fun Fact: While being a master painter of the Baroque Age, Rubens was also an avid art collector, having collected over 300 paintings, a dozen ivory sculptures, and even an Egyptian mummy.
