About the Artist
Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York and became a leading artist under the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. His works, including his Drowning Girl (1963), Head with Red Shadow (1965), and his Bedroom at Arles (1992), all were influenced by comic strips and became highly-illustrative parodies of the originals. These large, vibrant pieces composed by Lichtenstein were more tongue-in-cheek and sarcastic, going against the mainstream of popular advertisements and comics of the time.

About the Movement
Lichtenstein worked in the Pop Art Age of art. Pop Art arose in the United Kingdom and then to the United States within the middle of the 20th Century (or the middle of the 1900s). Artworks within the Pop Art movement sought to challenge the aesthetics and teachings of fine art of the Classical, Renaissance, and Baroque movements. Pop Art implements iconography from popular imagery (hence the name "Pop" Art) and uses sarcasm and irony to invoke new meanings and messages. Some of the most famous Pop Art artists included Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Richard Hamilton.

Fun Fact: Lichtenstein actually started as a Cubist artist, but was pushed by his son to move toward Pop Art.
