About the Artwork
Carved out of wood from the French region of Alsace, Nikolaus von Hagenau composed Saint Anthony Abbot as he is pushing back the forces of a satanic demon. Also known as Anthony the Great, Saint Anthony Abbot helped to spread the Christian idea of monotheism (or belief in a singular god) across Egypt and North Africa during the 3rd and 4th Centuries (or during the 200s and 300s). Anthony is called to assist those with Saint Anthony's Fire, skin diseases that become infectious. The "fire" of Saint Anthony can be visually seen within the eccentric rippling of the robe (a play on the movement of fire) as well as the demon from the depths of Hell. Von Hagenau portrays the saint repelling the advances of the demon by stepping on him while appearing stoic and composed.

About the Artist
Nikolaus von Hagenau was a German Baroque sculptor who worked in Strasbourg during the late 15th Century and into the 16th Century (or during the 1400s into the 1500s). The sculptor carved elegant works for various cloisters, churches, and cathedrals, including his Saint Anthony Abbot (1500), the Isenheim Altarpiece (1505), and the High Altarpiece of the Strasbourg Cathedral (1500). Von Hagenau's detailed and precise technique within his sculptures, typically composed of wood rather than stone or metal, highlight the intricacies of the Baroque Age of art.

About the Movement
Saint Anthony Abbot was composed in the Baroque Age of art. After the Renaissance Age, Baroque art was encouraged and influenced by the Catholic Church and the Counter Reformation to bring citizens back to Catholicism from the simple and austere Protestantism. Baroque art tended to be highly decorative and extravagant, creating dramatic scenes and vivid narratives through its painting and sculpture. Some of the most famous Baroque artists included Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Carracci Brothers (Annibale, Agostino, and Ludovico), Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, and Pietro da Cortona.
