About the Artwork
Also known as the Barberini Faun, Edmé Bouchardon made a replica of an original 3rd Century BCE Hellenistic statue (or during the 200s Before Common Era). The name Barberini Faun comes from the patron of this replica: Cardinal Francesco Barberini, nephew of Pope Urban VIII. The faun (Roman for the Greek satyr) can be seen in a drunken slumber after attending a festival for Dionysus.

About the Artist
Known for the sculptures that reside within the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in Paris, France, Edmé Bouchardon is known for his Neoclassical aesthetic mixed with the French culture of the 18th Century (or of the 1700s). Works including his Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons (1745), Street Vendor (1760), and Cupid (1744) all rejected the elegant, flamboyant Rococo style. Instead, Bouchardon harked back to the realistic, mythological roots through the Neoclassical style.

About the Movement
Sleeping Satyr was composed in the Neoclassicism Age of art. Neoclassical art drew its inspiration from the Classical Age and through Greco-Roman antiquity. It came about in Europe to counter the ornate and decorative Rococo style. Neoclassical elements were based more on the simple and the serene, letting viewers admire the beauty of the figures and scene within the artwork rather than a narrative or intricate detail. Some of the most famous Neoclassicism artist included Jacques-Louis David, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Antonio Canova, and Johan Tobias Sergel.
