Artistic Movement: Renaissance

About the Artwork
Commissioned for the Medici Family, one of Giorgio Vasari's biggest patrons during his life, the Vulcan's Forge is a rendering of both symbolism and mythology. Vulcan (the Greek name for Hephaestus) was the Roman god of fire, volcanoes, and metalworking. It was in his forge that he is said to have created the lightning bolt (for Jupiter/Zeus), the trident (for Neptune/Poseidon), and the pitchfork (for Pluto/Hades). However, as depicted within Vasari's painting, it is the culminating intersection between invention and art, intelligence and design.

About the Artist
Known as the first art historian, Giorgio Vasari is your guide through the Hall of the Art Thieves. Born in Tuscany, Vasari became versed in painting and architecture before delving into history and maintaining detailed documentation of past and present (at the time, during the Renaissance Age) artists. He composed a piece of writing titled The Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects (1550) that lists out techniques, works, influences, and patrons of various artists, much of which art historians use today to study and analyze these masterful works of art

About the Movement
Vulcan's Forge was composed in the Renaissance Age of art. The Renaissance Age was a time, mostly known throughout Europe, that occurred during the 14th and 17th Centuries (or between the 1300s and 1600s). It lies between the Middle Ages and the Baroque Age. Literally meaning "rebirth", the Renaissance was a rebirth of Classical antiquity, allowing artists, writers, poets, scholars, scientists, and philosophers to study and pay homage to their ancient ancestors. During this time, artists were known for painting and sculpting works of Greco-Roman mythology or narratives from the Bible that showcased both cultural themes as well as themes of Christianity. Some of the most famous Renaissance artists included Michelangelo Buonarroti, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael Sanzio, and Tiziano Vecello (better known as Titian).
