About the Artwork
Gustave Caillebotte employs his interest and influence of the realism of photography within his Young Man at His Window. The young man in question is his brother, René, in his home in Paris, France. The audience's eyes get pulled back through the scene through the winding streets as they carve their way through buildings. Caillebotte gives the illusion that the audience is also seeing what his brother is seeing as he stares off down the city streets.

About the Artist
Although an artist himself, Gustave Caillebotte was also a patron of Impressionist art. Born in Paris, France, in 1848, Caillebotte painted a little more realistically than other Impressionist artists, such as Claude Monet or Edgar Degas. This might have been due to his interest in the early stages of photography; the realistic influence from photography mixed with his patronage of Impressionist art blended together to form his own, unique style, which can be seen within works such as his Portrait de l'artiste (1892), Paris Street, Rainy Day (1877), and his Yellow Roses in a Vase (1882).

About the Movement
Young Man at His Window was composed in the Impressionist Age of art. Impressionism was characterized by extremely loose brushstrokes that were visible throughout the entire painting. This 19th-Century (or 1800s) art movement took landscapes, figures, and objects and incorporated both movement and emotion. Impressionism, in a matter of style, was almost the blending between Cubism and Baroque art; that dramatic and emotional appeal of the Baroque mixed with the inclusion of motion and the passing of time of Cubism. Some of the most famous Impressionist artists included Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas.
